Senior ITS Engineer

Transportation Systems and Traffic Engineering

Southfield, Michigan

POSITION OVERVIEW

Completes a wide variety of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and traffic engineering assignments. The Engineer at this level is a fully qualified professional, proficient with the design, specification, and operation of ITS elements and systems within the framework of traffic engineering and traffic operations and/or planning.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs ITS engineering tasks and particularly important engineering work efficiently and accurately.

Reviews and/or provides input relative to the use of ITS national standards and/or MDOT standards defined in specifications.

Designs locations for ITS devices such as DMSs, MVDs, and CCTVs, prepares communication plans, and oversees ITS device integration.

Prepares complete ITS design plans and other ITS special provision documents, especially for MDOT submittals, including engineering computations and quantity estimates.

Reviews Equipment Integration Plans and Acceptance Test Plans.

Prepares for and attends meetings with MDOT and other clients.

Provides input and helps prepare proposal pursuits.

Provides technical guidance to CAD Designer/Drafters, Designers, and lower-level Engineers working on the same project.

May be required to provide the seal and signature of the professional engineer (if applicant possesses PE license), as appropriate, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances.

May act in an advisory capacity to senior management personnel on engineering related matters.

Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor of Science in Civil or Electrical Engineering (or related field), Masters Degree preferred.

Some traffic engineering experience is desirable.

Minimum of 6-10 years of related work experience preferably with MDOT or other DOTs. 

Professional Engineering registration desired, but not required.

PTOE certification desired, but not required.

Highly desirable:

        Expertise in testing hardware and/or software

        Familiarity with system development and/or maintenance and operations environments

        Familiarity with NTCIP standards

        Familiarity with Communications systems, fiber and wireless

        Familiarity with Systems Engineering

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

Proficiency in utilizing CAD (preferably Microstation) and MS Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, etc.)

Familiarity with traffic engineering software such as Synchro/SimTraffic and HCS, is desirable.
