Roadway Weather Information Systems (RWIS), the newest technology for monitoring real-time weather conditions, is being introduced in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
MDOT Superior Region has initiated a project to position 25 RWIS sites in strategic locations throughout the Upper Peninsula. In addition to traditional weather information devices and CCTV, the system development team will be considering active and passive roadway devices to measure ice, snow, freezing temperature and depth of frost. The system will provide critical information to motorists to allow them to make informed decisions concerning travel and to road crews with additional information to facilitate road maintenance which may include snow depth, ice on the road and freezing point temperature of a roadway surface. More information about this project can be obtained from Dawn Gustafson, MDOT Superior Region Traffic & Safety Engineer.
A Vendor Demonstration was held on November 28th in Escanaba. Six internationally known RWIS equipment manufacturers, software and service providers were present to demonstrate their equipment and to make presentations during the all day event. The presentations are provided below as are photographs of a few of the event activities.
