ITS Michigan Wireless Seminar 2007
Our March Seminar on Wireless Communications Applications was a success in both attendance and information conveyed. The conference at the Genoa Woods Conference and Banquet Center near Brighton was attended by ninety-six persons. This was our largest turnout ever for a quarterly meeting. ITS Michigan thanks Dan Carrier of Carrier and Gable for arranging the facilities and finding the speakers and to Gary Piotrowicz from the Road Commission for Oakland County for setting the technical direction for the program. The seminar was oriented to public infrastructure operators who needed to learn the basics of wireless communications available. In the morning the presenters explained the technologies, and in the afternoon public agencies using wireless technologies described their experiences.
The technical applications included a discussion of Mesh systems and Direct Short Range Communication (DSRC) by Motorola, High Performance IP Broadband Wireless Ethernet/Video by Encom, and Low Powered Short Range Communications by Sensys. The program included an Automotive Update from the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Consortium and a description of the Michigan Department of Transportation VII Involvement and Vision. In the afternoon representatives from the City of Lansing, the City of Detroit, and the Road Commission of Macomb County described how they were applying wireless communications. We also had a presentation on the Michigan Department of Transportation Communications Study. The morning break and the lunch break permitted networking opportunities to learn more about the practical considerations of wireless connections.
